What is trichology?
Trichology is the scientific study of hair and scalp health. It is a non-medical branch of dermatology, and can identify various conditions such as hair fall out, breakage, scalp disease, thinning and the treatments of these conditions based on contributing factors. Contributing factors can range from nutritional deficiencies to stress to disease or illness. Referral to a medical doctor may or may not be a part of your treatment, depending upon your individual conditions.
Karen Flowers, Curl House’s owner and certified Trichologist, treats a variety of hair and scalp conditions including female hair loss, male pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, trichotillomania, traction alopecia, slow hair growth, hair breakage and all scalp disorders. While trichology is not a guaranteed solution to hair loss, it can identify treatment options to help restore, stop or slow hair loss.
Our Trichology Services
All trichology services start with a personal consultation with Karen. During this consultation we’ll discuss your health, family history, lifestyle, and diet, and we’ll complete a thorough scalp/skin analysis using a digital microscope. This allows us to rule out possible causes as well as determine a treatment method. We strongly suggest you bring a list of any medications you are currently taking, as well as the results of any recent blood tests. Your consultation will cost $99 and can last up to an hour — all consultations are completely private and confidential.
Once your initial consultation is done, a customized treatment plan will be designed along with a quote for the services. In some instances, referral to a medical providersuch as a dermatologist, endocrinologist, dietician, or nutritionistmay be required prior to finalizing hair loss/scalp disorder recognition and the most effective treatment plan.
Our two-fold holistic treatment plan combines a diet regimen as well as in-salon therapy treatments designed to regenerate cells to promote hair growth. This plan also requires a customized self-care home treatment regimen to be followed as described in your treatment plan.
We cannot accept medical insurance at this time, but depending upon the recommended treatment, payment plans may be available.
*Scalp Treatments/Hair Loss Services do not include salon services.

Karen Flowers is a certified Trichologist who treats all types of hair and scalp conditions.
Karen graduated from World Trichology Society after studying under Dr. David Kingsley and is also trained as a certified Holistic Hair Loss Practitioner. She is a member of Trichologists on a Mission (TOAM), helping to bring awareness to the epidemic of hair loss, the misconceptions surrounding it, and available causes and solutions through educational forums and resources.
After starting her own natural hair salon, Karen realized a large portion of her clients were struggling with some variety of hair loss. Crushed by each woman’s struggle with losing her hair and seeing the way it affected their self-esteem, self-confidence and well-being, Karen determined to find the WHY behind this hair loss epidemic.
Karen’s mission through her trichology practice is to educate women (and men) about how to maintain healthy hair and prevent hair loss. She recognizes that the challenges women face are far greater and much deeper than a cosmetic hair style. Digging down into the true “root” of the issue, her studies found that hair loss can be caused by a variety of contributing factors such as nutritional deficiencies, medication side effects, illness, stress, genetics and environmental factors.
With a background in Psychology and having worked as Research Faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University for 10 years, she understands the need to keep a healthy mind and recognizes how our perception of ourselves, our identity, self-esteem, and our consciousness can be impacted by the health of our hair. Hair loss, especially in women, is often traumatic and can lead to depression and anxiety because of its strong ties to our conceptualizations of beauty and identity.
As a trichologist and stylist, Karen is able to give her clients a holistic plan to treat their hair loss issues while also providing moral support and education along the way. Karen speaks frequently to groups and organizations about trichology practices and natural hair transition.
