The Women Behind the Curls
Founder + Trichologist
Karen Flowers (formerly Karen Wilson) is the founder of Curl House. After doing traditional hair styling out of her home for many years, she embraced the beauty and freedom of her own natural hair, and wanted to help other women do the same. Today Karen is a licensed cosmetologist, certified Trichologist (WTS), and instructor with over 10 years experience in the beauty and hair industry. She is also the author of the book Yes You Can: A Quick and Easy Guide to Natural Hair Care.

Danita is a natural hair stylist and educator who is passionate about teaching women to care for their natural hair. She has traveled extensively as an on-site hair stylist for galas, professional conferences and hair shows. She is also a professional makeup artist and uses this talent to show women how to enhance their natural beauty. She loves arts and crafts and enjoys making jewelry as well as traveling, reading and spending quality time with friends and family.
Meet the Founder of Curl House
Karen is not just passionate about helping women transition to and style their natural hair, but also educating women on the deeper issues connected to natural hair like identity and self esteem. She developed an educational series, Kurl Talk: Learning to Love Your Hair One Strand at a Time, to teach women how to adopt healthy hair through a healthy lifestyle.
Karen’s broadcast credits include features as a regular commentator and natural hair care expert for CBS News WTVR’s two-part report on perceptions of natural hair in the African American and professional community, as well as CBS News WTVR’s This Morning Virginia coverage on “The Science behind Healthy Hair”, “Natural Hair Styles’ “Summer Natural Hair Care” and ‘Protective Styles”. Besides broadcast segments, Karen has been a featured presenter at several natural hair workshops and seminars in Virginia, North Carolina, Philadelphia and Texas.
She also has taught workshops at Taliah Waajid’s World Natural Hair and Beauty Show in Atlanta, Georgia. Karen’s print credits include regular contributions to Beauty Times magazine. Karen has also been highlighted in print media as an encouraging voice for women to love their natural hair. Karen is the PR Chairman for the LB Beauty Education Foundation. She received a dual Master’s in Social Work – Urban Studies degree from Michigan State University and currently resides in Richmond, VA with her husband. She loves to travel, watch romantic movies, and attributes her success to her strong faith in the Lord.
